Assignment
tasks are phrased in different ways to test your knowledge, understanding and
skill. Below is a list of some of the
common requirements and how to approach answering them:
DESCRIBE: This is asking you to put
into your own words, information that you have read and include an example
which shows that you have a good understanding of the knowledge
EXPLAIN: This requires students to take
some information which they have read and in their own words the use and value
of that information. Again an example should be included to show understanding.
DEMONSTRATE: Here students should
provide their knowledge of a topic but also show, through practical evidence
how the topic relates to a real situation – using such as observation report,
witness statement, photographs, and workplace examples.
EVALUATE: This requires students to
take a body of information/knowledge and to judge or show how well that
knowledge works in situations. Again practical evidence from a real situation
would normally be required
ANALYSE: This requires students to take
a body of information/knowledge and study or examine it in detail in order to
discover more about it
IDENTIFY: This is asking students to examine the
options and then make a choice about a topic. The tutor will normally expect
you to state your reasons for the choice
REFLECT: Students should consider
information given in the course notes and consider how that will impact on a
workplace situation. As with many of the above examples students should provide
a descriptive answer which includes appropriate examples.
